Why Diversification Still Matters in Crypto

Diversification is one of the oldest ideas in investing, and it applies to digital assets just as it does anywhere else: don't concentrate all of your risk in one place, because you're betting everything on a single outcome.

In a crypto context, that can mean several things:

- Across assets. Holding a single asset means your entire position rises and falls with that one project's fortunes — technical issues, competition, or shifting demand affect it directly.
- Across strategies. Combining, for example, longer-term holdings with a smaller allocation to shorter-term positions, or a fixed-term investment plan alongside spot holdings, spreads exposure across different time horizons and risk profiles.
- Across custody. Not keeping every asset in the same wallet, exchange account, or storage method reduces the impact of any single point of failure.

Diversification doesn't eliminate risk — a broad downturn can still affect a diversified portfolio — but it does reduce the odds that a single bad outcome wipes out your entire position. It trades "maximum possible upside from one bet" for "a more resilient set of outcomes overall," which is generally the more sustainable approach for most investors.
